We all know that weight gain during the holidays can sneak up on us if we are not mindful of our food choices. Here are some of my tips to avoid weight gain, and still enjoy the holidays!
Healthy Holiday Tips
Never show up to a holiday event hungry
Make sure you eat a healthy, balanced meal before you arrive or at least a protein shake, so that you're not starving once you arrive and start making bad choices.
Power up with protein
Choose lean protein-rich foods at parties like shrimp, salmon, poultry, and eggs that will satisfy and fill you up. Protein takes the longest to digest compared to fat and carbohydrates and will keep you fuller, longer.
Fill up on fiber…fruit and vegetables
Fruit and vegetables are loaded with dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals like potassium, which helps counter the bloating sodium in salty or processed foods, which holiday parties can be loaded with. Fiber is our friend.
Limit your alcohol
Choose alcohol that is clear like vodka, gin, white wine….red wine is fine also. Avoid beer as it can be bloating. Stay away from sugary drinks like juices or regular sodas combined with your cocktails. Alcohol hinders fat loss. Make sure to drink a glass of water between each alcoholic drink to stay hydrated and avoid a hangover.
Work out and de-stress yourself
Exercise will not only help control your weight, it'll improve your mood and sleep and enable you to better deal with holiday stress. Stress can trigger nervous eating habits.
Focus on fitness and fun…. not just food
Get together where you invite family members to go skiing or ice skating before coming back to your home for the festive meal. Instead of eating all day, organize a family football game, or hike.
